Successes
EJAM accomplishments so far:
History
Our founding:
EJAM evolved from a 2003 Minneapolis Urban League (MUL) meeting focusing on health disparities in communities of color. This meeting served as the foundation for a coalition of community members and organizations coming together to focus on environmental justice and health disparities. Issues that came up at the meeting were coal plant pollution, need for neighborhood legal advocacy assistance, lead poisoning, and health disparities.
Strategic Objectives
The following represent the key objectives of EJAM’s strategic plan:
Objective 1: Build EJAM’s base community
Objective 2: Develop EJAM Organizational Sustainability Plan
Objective 3: Develop EJAM logo, website, key messaging, presentation “toolkit,” and other promotional materials
Objective 4: Inspire and build capacity of Northside Minneapolis community to advocate localized sustainable economic initiatives
Community Engagement
Fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility for each other and the land is essential to improving the health and quality of life in our communities. As part of the Sustainable Economic Initiative, EJAM will pilot a community organizing model that builds its base community and provides opportunities for that base to prioritize and create solutions to the challenges they face. This base building is also a central focus of EJAM’s strategy for organizational sustainability.
Focus of Work
EJAM’s new focus of work is localized sustainable economic growth on the Northside of Minneapolis. This focus builds upon EJAM’s work in policy advocacy and environmental health education. EJAM program areas (in bold) and programs/projects include:
Environmental Justice Advocacy
Green Jobs Advocacy
Environmental and Social Justice Advocacy (on case-by-case basis)
Environmental Health
Healthy Legacy Year III
Sustainable Community
Sustainable Economic Initiative
Communities We Work With
While we envision working with low income communities, communities of color and Indigenous Peoples locally, regionally, and even globally as the organization grows; our work over the next three years will concentrate first on the Northside of Minneapolis where our organization is based. In keeping with EJAM’s core values we will work with people from a broad socio-economic background, but strive to work with those with the fewest opportunities for improving their quality of life and realizing a healthy and sustainable future.
Vision, Mission and Values
OUR VISION
We envision healthful, economically robust, environmentally sound communities, rooted in shared participation and equity.
OUR MISSION
EJAM works in collaboration with communities to create equitable, healthful and sustainable futures for all generations.
