Please join Sheila Holt-Orsted and U. S. Congressman Keith Ellison,

Sheila Holt-Orsted, cancer patient and victim of environmental racism, is fighting for justice for herself and her family. On October 7, 2007, Ms. Holt-Orsted is visiting the Twin Cities to tell her story of pollution and contamination, denial of accurate information, breast cancer, and her struggle for environmental justice. Ms. Holt-Orsted’s family farm – which the Holts have occupied for 60 years -- sits 15 feet from a toxic landfill site containing trichloroethylene (TCE). TCE is a carcinogenic industrial solvent and the 15th most toxic chemical known to man. Ms. Holt-Orsted acquired her cancer from drinking well water contaminated by the landfill near her Tennessee home. The Holt family is among more than 1,400 people who have used private wells near the landfill, where large amounts of toxic chemicals are seeping into the groundwater, according to records on file at the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
According to documents discovered by Ms. Holt-Orsted, city, county, and Tennessee state officials knew of the water contamination, but did nothing because of her race. Ms. Holt Orsted maintains that authorities notified white families of the hazards of drinking the contaminated well water, but not black families. State records show that high levels of TCE were found in the families well in 1991, but U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials assured them the water was safe to drink. A state groundwater official questioned the EPA's assurances at the time, but no further action was taken. State officials said they deferred to the EPA's opinion that the water was safe, while EPA officials say the state should have conducted further testing because the primary regulatory authority over the landfill falls to the state. While the state and the EPA each held the other responsible, the Holt family continued drinking the well water for another nine years.
About a dozen members of the family said they have been diagnosed with lung cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, diabetes, heart disease, heart murmurs or stomach-lining disorders. Many also said they have been plagued with chronic skin rashes. The Holts said their livestock also have suffered mysterious ailments, including mass cow deaths involving more than a dozen animals, and the births of three-legged chickens.
U. S. Congressman Keith Ellison, founder of the Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM), will join Ms. Holt-Orsted to discuss pending legislation on environmental justice and other related policy issues. Mr. Ellison led the fight for environmental justice while in the Minnesota state legislature, in the area of pesticides, lead, arsenic, mercury, and coal plant conversion, and he continues the fight in the U.S. Congress.

When: Sunday, October 7, 3:00-5:30
Where: Kwanazaa Church 2100 Emerson Avenue North, Minneapolis,
